How to Open Transparent (.MOV) Animation Files

Why won't it open?

Transparent .MOV files use a codec that stores an alpha channel (transparency). Many default media players on Windows—and even some on macOS—don't fully support these files.

This is a limitation of the media player or operating system, not the animation itself.

Best way to view your animation

The easiest and recommended way to view transparent .MOV files is to import them directly into your editing software, such as:

• Adobe Premiere Pro

• DaVinci Resolve

• Final Cut Pro

• CapCut

• Filmora

• Any editor that supports transparent video

Once imported, the transparency will display correctly.

Want to preview it outside your editor?

If you'd still like to open the file directly, you can try third-party media players such as:

• QuickTime Player (macOS)

• VLC Media Player

Why do the colors look wrong in VLC?

Some media players, including VLC, may display transparent .MOV files with incorrect colors, washed-out highlights, or a pink/purple tint. This happens because the player doesn't fully support the codec or color profile used for transparent video.

The animation itself isn't affected. Import it into your editing software (such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, or CapCut), where it will display with the correct colors and transparency.

Keep in mind that even these apps may not always display transparency correctly, depending on the codec and platform.
