Error Retrieving Frame When Importing a .MOV Animation
Written By ccLeaf Team
Last updated About 1 month ago
If you see an error similar to:
"Error retrieving frame X... substituting frame X"
when importing a ccLeaf animation into your editing software, don't worry. In most cases, this issue is caused by your local setup rather than the animation itself.
What does this error mean?
Your editing software was unable to decode one or more frames from the .MOV file, so it substitutes the missing frame instead.
This is usually related to your computer, software, or the downloaded file—not the animation.
Most common causes
1. Corrupted or incomplete download (Most Common)
If the download was interrupted or corrupted, some frames may be unreadable.
Solution:
Delete the downloaded file.
Download the animation again from ccLeaf.
Re-import it into your editor.
2. Outdated editing software
Older versions of editing software may have issues decoding newer codecs.
Solution:
Update your editing software to the latest version.
Restart your computer and try importing the file again.
3. Media codec or operating system issue
Some Windows installations may have missing or outdated media components required for certain video formats.
Solution:
Install the latest Windows updates.
Restart your computer.
Try importing the file again.
4. Slow, external, or cloud storage
Editing directly from:
OneDrive
Google Drive
Dropbox
External USB drives
Network drives
can sometimes prevent your editor from reading frames quickly enough.
Solution:
Move the animation to a local SSD or hard drive.
Import it from there instead.
5. Corrupted media cache
Your editing software's media cache may become corrupted over time.
Solution:
Clear your editor's media cache.
Restart the application.
Import the animation again.
6. Hardware or decoding limitations
If your system is under heavy load or has GPU decoding issues, frame retrieval errors may occur.
Solution:
Close unnecessary applications.
Restart your editor.
Update your GPU drivers if available.
How to tell if the issue is on our side
In rare cases, an animation export may become corrupted.
To check:
Try importing a different ccLeaf animation.
If other animations work normally, but one specific animation always fails, the file may need to be re-rendered.
If multiple users report the exact same animation failing at the same frame, we'll investigate and replace the animation if necessary.
Before contacting support
Please try the following:
Re-download the animation.
Restart your editing software.
Update your editing software.
Move the file to a local drive.
Clear your media cache.
Test another ccLeaf animation.
If the issue still occurs, please include:
The name of the animation.
The editing software and version you're using.
Your operating system (Windows/macOS).
A screenshot of the error.
Whether the issue happens with all animations or only one specific animation.
This information helps us quickly determine whether the issue is related to your system or if the animation itself needs to be replaced.
